QUAIL VALLEY GARDEN CLUB HOLIDAY LIGHTS CONTEST 2023

On December 12th, the Quail Valley Garden Club Holiday Lighting Committee canvassed the neighborhood to seek three exceptional homes that were fabulously decorated for the 2023 Christmas season. Following a delightful planning and discussion over dinner at the home of the committee chair, Charlene Randall, the group set out to find homes that were decorated with creativity, theme, harmony and visibility. The Committee included Rebecca Randall, Gretchen Cockerill, Deborah Douglas and Cynthia Stewart. Another member, Becky Faust, was unable to participate.

The winners for the 2023 contest are:

Steve and Amy Grant

3202 El Dorado

Billy King and Dawn Dippel

3154 Robinson Road

Mark Jones and Kelly Kelly

3003 Villa Lane

A Lowes gift card from the Garden Club was presented to the homeowners to show their appreciation of the splendid job they had done in presenting their decorating ideas.

Holiday Lighting 2022

On December 6, 2022 the Quail Valley Garden Club’s Holiday Lighting committee, consisting of Co-Chairs Charlene Randall and Rebecca Randall Feit, and team member Gretchen Cockerill, was busy buzzing the neighborhood on the hunt for the top three best, most fabulous, decorated homes, displaying exceptional holiday lighting design and décor.

Making their selection of winners based overall creativity, theme, balance, harmony and visibility, the Quail Valley Garden Club’s 2022 Holiday Lighting committee, is proud to announce the following winners of the Garden Club’s 46th Holiday Lighting Contest:

  • 3123 Millbrook - Nicholas & Ashley Olheiser

  • 2703 E. Pebble Beach - Michael & Sylvia Castillo

  • 2610 Robinson Rd - Chase Culpepper

3123 Millbrook - Nicholas & Ashley Olheiser- The committee shared that the Olheiser’s home on Millbrook caught their attention early on, starting with the bright white glow in the sky near Glen Lakes and East Creek Club.  This entire house and yard (and even the driveway) is adorned with tightly and artfully wrapped, vibrant, bright white lights that we are pretty sure can be enjoyed from the space station!  Equally spectacular is the beautiful igloo shining so very brightly, which we were advised took 350 HOURS to put together!  The Olheiser’s impressive holiday lighting display has sparked a yearly tradition of neighbors gathering outside to enjoy all the enchanting Christmas lights on the street, while drinking warm cups of hot cocoa!

2703 E. Pebble Beach - Michael and Sylvia Castillo – This home and holiday lighting display brightens the entire intersection of E. Pebble Beach and La Costa.  This impressive demonstration of holiday spirit starts with stately oak trees entirely wrapped in beautiful white lights, further complimented by dazzling, colorful stars dangling from the trees, which also match the star decor visible inside this family home. Warm Christmas lights decoratively placed on the house, in the trees and in the flower beds brighten and bring completion to a finished, festive presentation.  The Holiday Lighting committee had a special treat too, when they were given an enthusiastic tour from the Castillo children who were more than happy to point out some secret decorations and the ornaments they helped to assemble.

2610 Robinson Rd - Chase Culpepper – When decorating a house on Robinson Road could feel like a battle between Sampson and Goliath, the QVGC Holiday Lighting Committee points out that sometimes it is not about how many lights you have in your display, but rather how you go about creating that special Christmas feeling with your design and how you creatively utilize your lighting.  This year Chase Culpepper and his daughters created a beautiful, red and white themed holiday exhibit, with lights hanging from a candy cane “fence” that surrounds their entire corner lot, and utilizing bright LED lights, and a combination of running red and white lights, to bring focus and outline to the roof of their home.  All-in-all this colorful holiday design brings warm feelings and festive highlights to the beauty and charm of their Quail Valley home.

“It was another amazing night for the QVGC judging committee to tour all the beautiful homes in our neighborhood”, said Rebecca Randall Feit.  “So many beautiful and unique holiday decorations to choose from made it very challenging to narrow it down to only three homes” Cockerill added.

The QVGC Holiday Lighting Committee invites you to cruise the streets and view the stunning holiday displays of their winners, and urges you to also include in your holiday lighting tour, Lollipop Lane (Golden Hills Lane), the famous Candy Cane Lane (Robinson Road), as well as cruising through the spectacular holiday lighting displays on Spyglass Lane where you will see a continuous “fence of lights” linking several home-decorations together.

And no honest, holiday lighting sightseeing enterprise in the Quail Valley community would miss the magical journey to the North Pole (down Kiamesha and Boca Raton Court) which ends at Santa’s House.  It’s well known that Santa’s schedule each year is handing out candy canes and taking Christmas gift wishes every night through Christmas Eve (6:30pm-9pm)!

From all of us in the Quail Valley Garden Club, Ho, Ho, Ho and Merry Christmas!

The Quail Valley Garden Club congratulated each of our 2021 Holiday Lighting winners with a winner’s sign in their yard and complimentary $50 Lowe’s gift card.

Holiday Lighting 2021

The Quail Valley Garden Club is excited to announce the Holiday lighting winners for 2021.  The judging committee of Charlene Randall, Rebecca Randall Feit, Becky Faust, Cynthia Stewart, and Deborah Douglas spent an evening driving around the neighborhood viewing the decorations,  judging on creativity, design, tastefulness, and theme.  There were so many beautiful homes to choose from but three stood out as exceptional.

The winners are:

3135 Robinson Rd.            The White Family

3611 Boca Ct.                     The Strange Family

3527 Thunderbird St.       The Le Lacheur Family

Bill and Cindy White, and daughter Zoe, have lived in their home on Robinson Rd for 4 years.  Bill says he loves to decorate for all holidays and makes a special effort to bring the decorations as close to the street as possible for all to enjoy.  Their snowman theme is a delight to all.

Mark and Rachel Strange have lived on Boca Ct for 13 years.  They enjoy sharing the holidays with friends and neighbors.  Rachel has been instrumental in organizing the live Santa workshop at the “North Pole” on Boca Ct for years.  Their elegant, bright decorations add to the festivities on their street and neighborhood.

Gene and Kelli Le Lacheur have lived on Thunderbird St since 2017 and enjoy entertaining and decorating their home and garden throughout the year. Their playful and animated theme stretches to all sections of their beautiful corner lot and brightens the neighborhood – you HAVE to see how many lights are displayed!

Each winner is recognized by a winner’s sign in their yard and each given a $50 Lowe’s gift card.

Christmas Light Judging Dec 10.jpg

The holidays are upon us and the Garden Club is organized, poised and ready for the wonderfully festive 44th year of judging the Holiday Lighting contest!  This year our Holiday Lighting committee co-chairs, Anne McBride and Linda Holder, will be joined by team members Marsha Strain and Barbara Thompson the evening of December 10th to cruise the neighborhood in focused pursuit of those very special, top three holiday decorated homes and yards!

Collectively the team makes their final decisions, carefully and scrupulously, based comprehensively on the obvious time and effort taken in the Holiday décor design and based on the following criteria:

  • Creativity - use of lights and the overall holiday display of the design-creativity.

  • Theme - a uniform design-concept is used throughout - on the house and yard.

  • Balance & Harmony - art principals, giving symmetry and proportion, must be evident in overall presentation

  • Visibility - decorations must have their own lights or spot lights and lights must be used on the house so the total presentation is discernable and visible in the dark.

Linda Holder, a co-chair of this committee for the past 4 years, shares that her greatest personal challenge each year is that “with so many beautifully decorated homes in Quail Valley, it can be challenging to narrow it down to just three.”  “Creative use of lights and decorations plus the obvious time and effort that went into producing the display are both important criteria to me when judging”.

Co-chair Ann McBride agreed, saying “Judging is very hard; we have so many beautifully decorated homes. This year we are dividing the homes into four sections and each committee member will make a list of the outstanding decorations in their section.  Then we will gather one evening and narrow it down to three beautiful yards.”

Think this would be a fun and festive activity to be involved in?  Anne shares this about being a part of this fun-tastic holiday project, “This committee is lot of fun.  We drive around with friends enjoying looking at the holiday decorations.  Last year we had eight committee members and we enjoyed a meal together before we started our judging.  I met members that I didn’t know that well”.  So any club members who are interested in joining this fun committee, as a Chair, Co-Chair, or simply a member of the team to fellowship and help with judging the Holiday Light Contest next year should contact Deborah Douglas, our Club president, and let her know of your interest before January 14th, 2021.
